9. Know what’s in your makeup

For the next 10 days, I will be posting daily tips for how you can minimize your exposure to toxic chemicals in our environment. 💄💅🤢

9. Know what’s in your makeup.

2F2D34A0-F992-491E-B22D-CEDF792B5F95One of my research projects showed that women exposed to a handful of common chemicals classified as EDCs (endocrine disrupting chemicals) go through menopause earlier than women who have less exposure. It gained a lot of media attention because several of the toxic chemicals I found in my study are common in makeup products. Think about it: we put makeup on our skin, makeup has chemicals, and then our skin absorbs the chemicals in makeup.  Even though you may be far from menopause, I think it is still important for you to consider how chemicals that you’re exposed to can be impacting your health. Women who go through menopause early are likely to have a shorter fertility window, meaning that they may use up their eggs at a faster rate than someone else their age. In the fertility world, this can translate to women who respond less to medications or are less successful with their use of assisted reproductive technology compared to others their age.

Use personal care products made without toxic chemicals. Avoid anything that contains phthalates, parabens, fragrances, or triclosan. Use the Skin Deep EWG and Safe Cosmetics for a list of responsible companies.

2. Food storage is important

2. Food storage is important.

Plastics have dangerous chemicals like phthalates and BPA. These chemicals have been linked to taking longer to conceive and pregnancy complications. Keep food in glass or stainless steel containers; avoid storing food in plastic. Do NOT heat your food in plastic containers. Heating plastic increases the leaching of chemicals. Use a paper towel or glass lid to food in the microwave.

1. Eat your fruits and Veggies

For the next 10 days, I will be posting daily tips for how you can minimize your exposure to toxic chemicals in our environment. 💄💅🤢

First recommendation on this top 10 list- eat your fruits and veggies. 🍏🥦The best way to do this is to eat a variety of fresh produce. 🥑🍍🍒Wash your produce for at least 20 seconds to minimize your exposure to pesticides. 👏Avoid canned products because this can expose you to chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA). Eat organic when you can and strategically by utilizing resources like EWG’s dirty list: certain items are worth the money of switching to organic (“Dirty 12”) more than other produce (“Clean 15”)
